The Power of Women's Anger | Soraya Chemaly
delivered by Soraya Chemaly where she explains about the POWER OF WOMEN'S ANGER
So first, lets start off with the definition of anger given by the speaker. She mentions that anger is a Human emotions, whether good or bad. It warns us of threat, insult, indignity and harm.
And truth be told, girls and women are mainly taught that their anger is better left unvoiced.
It is almost like it has been gendered/categorized by who knows who, that explains that :
1. If you are a man, then it is okay to let out your anger.
2. You are expected to penalized anger if you are a woman.
3. If you're a white man and you let out your anger, then it proves that you have civic virtues.
4. However, if you're a black man, if you let out your anger, you will be labeled as criminal.
In the talk, the speaker mentioned about how her own mother handle with anger by throwing plates like frisbees at their verandah..
So you see how easy this matter can be pass on through generations over generations without realizing (which in this case, children will most likely imitates parents behaviour and restrained themself from being angry, because that's what their parents do and reproduce the patterns)
But what they don't realize that it is important for these children to learn how to let out their anger, so that one day if these children faced with street harasser/sexist, racist classmates or even predatory teacher or employer in the future, they can always defend themself.
Thus, adults need to stop teaching children directly/indirectly that aggression and anger are markers of manhood and girls need to stop biting their own tongue and swallow their pride and instead teach them that by letting out anger can be a potential catalyst for change and it will avoid them to have the potential health disorder.
So girls, voice up!
