Chinese New Year!

For this week, we don't have any class due to Chinese new year. Therefore, instead of updating what we have learnt in class. I will share a little bit about Chinese New Year.

This year, will be the year of Earth Pig! Chinese New Year is a time for families to be together. Wherever they are, people are expected to be home to celebrate the festival with their families. The New Year's Eve dinner is called 'reunion dinner', and is believed to be the most important meal of the year.

Like usual, there will be a lot of fireworks during chinese new year's eve. Talking about that, it reminds me about the legend of Nian, where it basically explains on why the Chinese will light up fireworks during Chinese new year's eve!

According to Chinese mythology there was a horrible beast called Nian which lived on the mountains. Towards the end of Winter when there was nothing to eat, Nian would come on the first day of New Year to the villages to eat livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. The villagers would live in terror over the Winter, but over time they learned that the ferocious Nian was afraid of three things: fire, and noise and  the colour red.  So when the New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns and red spring scrolls on windows and doors.  They also used firecrackers to frighten away the Nian. From then on, Nian never came to the village again.
